A desire to own and run my own research firm led me to launch, in 1983, the first solely ad hoc market research company in the Canadian pharmaceutical industry, Chapter Three Market Research Services Inc.

In its turn, Chapter Three spawned two other companies that filled important specialist roles in pharmaceutical research – Focus Two Inc. and Medical Information Exchange Inc. MIE was devoted to the support of the pharmaceutical sales function, and provided what were then unique avenues of direct communication with physicians. Focus Two was a specialist field house with a complete focus group infrastructure. These three companies employed some 50 people under my leadership.

Over the years, the success of my companies had gradually drawn me away from a direct role in primary research, and involved me more in administration and sales. From 2000 – 2001, I undertook a reevaluation of my career, and decided to downsize to a boutique ‘shop’, The Global Chapter Inc., which allowed me to return to research and strategy fundamentals, and the hands-on work I had come to miss.

The fundamentals I’m interested in reflect my determination to work with the complexity that has been increasing across the industry for the whole of my career. Today, the shift from saving lives to extending life has created a whole new set of issues for our industry to face, and has brought education of medical personnel and patients, good corporate citizenship, and standards of ethical conduct to the fore.
